Spoa - Agios Nicholaos

Apart from the lovely host family the staff included Nemo who despite his maritime name was afraid of water.
Nemo never got to lie still for long because he had to follow his "master" where ever he went.
Wayward as he was he only let you touch him if he wanted you to.

First stop of the day was Spoa. A strange town we thought. There were many empty houses both newly build and decayed.
The bell tower was open so I popped up for a view.
There were lots of cats here, too, like this lovely family.
When we walked into town we saw a small local taverna and decided to visit it on the way back but in the middle of the town we found this little kafeneion.
We were the only guests.
The owner was a real nice guy. We had a long talk about the town, the people, emigration, taxes, prices of food and gas. (The price of gas was about €2.2 ~ 16 Danish kroner)
Many Karpathians had left for the USA and came back once a year.
The emigrants would build a house in town for their children who only came home once in a while so therefore many of the houses were uninhabited.
Most of the things in the kafeneion were old family things e.g. sticks for spinning silk yarn.
The only thing that was not from the island was the deer.
We drove down to Agios Nicholaos to have lunch and a swim.
I felt like having Gavros (fried sardines) but they didn't have them. They only had Serdelles (which is also sardines). These sardines were salted and put in olive oil. They were really salty. Luckily I had also ordrered Greek Salat which took away a bit of the salty taste.
On the way home we visited Apella Beach. Our guide had praised the beach as one of the best on the island.
It was nice, men the beaches at Finiki and Lefkos were better in our opinion.
We agreed to try to make a short cut to town by walking along the beach from the hotel. Even if it was hard and difficult to walk in the sand at times the trip took less than half the time it took along the main road.
> The Greek aren't always up to date - not even when it comes to football
We walked along the beach home again. There was plenty of light.
Just beneath our hotel the beach was filled with big stones and diffucult to walk on so we had to leave the beach and follow the road.
We agreed to try the beachway anyway so we went back to the beach and made a short cut through a closed lunch taverna. It worked out fine until the theft alarm started. We left the place in a haste and followed the road for the rest of the way. .
In Taverna Sardeles they showed the match between The Netherlands and England. I cheered for the dutch guys along with all the other people in the taverna. There were quite a few dutch on the island.
